MacBook hot but the fan is not spinning: why
On Apple Silicon the fan is the last thing to react. That is by design.
Why the fan waits
M-series chips are efficient and the cooling system is large for the heat they make, so Apple tunes the fans to stay off or slow until the temperature is well above idle. The case acts as a heat sink, which is why the keyboard area can feel warm while the fan hardly moves. The fan curve is a design choice, not a fault.
When to worry
- The Mac slows down noticeably (thermal pressure above Nominal in
sudo powermetrics --samplers thermal -n 1). - You hear no fan at all even when the chip is at sustained 100% load for a long time, and temperatures keep rising. That is worth a visit to Apple Support.
- The Mac shuts down on its own.
What helps right now
- See what is busy: Activity Monitor, CPU tab, sort by % CPU.
- Stop leftover builds, dev servers and AI agent sessions.
- Put heavy work on the efficiency cores with
taskpolicy -b, or use WhoIsCooking, which shows the actual chip temperature and cools with one click. - Keep vents clear and use a hard, flat surface.
For how to read the temperature itself, see how to check your Mac's temperature on Apple Silicon.
Frequently asked questions
Is it normal for my M4 Pro MacBook to be hot with the fan on low?
Often yes. Apple Silicon fan curves are conservative and the chassis absorbs heat first. If performance drops or temperatures keep climbing, reduce the load or have it checked.
Why does my MacBook Pro feel hot but not loud?
The aluminium body spreads heat and the fans are tuned to start late, so you feel warmth before you hear the fans.
How can I make the fan work less?
Lower sustained CPU load. Moving background and agent work to the efficiency cores reduces heat and the need for fan speed.
